12/12/11

I have a lot of catching up to do with this. Its incredible how unmotivated I am. At least I can work on it over Christmas.

Anyway I can't really remember well enough to put dates on any of this work. I'm not certain if it's in order either.

The photo above is the inside of the bishop I made from tissue and wire. I like this view of it. It is different and I think it looks a bit like a spiders web.
The piece on the right is made of plaited gardening wire. It is based on the chess pieces but isn't meant to represent any one in particular. I like it because it is simple and, apart from the plaiting which is mindless, it was quite quick to make.
I was told by one of my tutors to make a much larger piece by weaving things together. I am still working on this. I find that I rule out a number of things straight off with out trying them. I wonder if I over think things. She told me to enjoy it but I don't seem able to relax into it.
While I was experimenting earlier with some acetate a bit of black paper got stuck to it because of the static. If I held the acetate about an inch and a half off the table the bit of paper would fall from the plastic to the table and jump back up again. I took a few videos of it. This is the best one.

Printed acetate
It is a while since my last post and I will probably forget something I have done. This is one of the most recent things.

The tutors sugested I use paper weaves I had made to project onto a wall. I had to get special acetate that could go thought a printer without melting. The woman in the library printed the weave on to it for me. I brought a projector down to the room just outside the church. There were a lot of white boxes up against the wall but I left them as they were. I took a few photos of the projection as well as some video.

I am happy enough with how it turned out and I suppose it will help me take my work in a different direction.

10/11/11

This is a paper weave I made. I am happy with it although I started it using glue and finished using sellotape which you can see in the photo from the shine. I made a simpler one with double sided tape with was much easier than glue but just as neat. I would like to try making a round version and experiment with this in other ways.

9/11/11

For a couple of days I have been working on another chess piece the same size as the last ones. This time I plaited the wire and used much more of it. It took awhile to do but I have made a bishop. I haven't enough wire to make any more at the moment. I am thinking of covering it in tissue like I did with tiny versions I made before.
Today I made very simple silhouette style pieces from cardboard. I had intended to make two of each shape and slot them together but I didn't try that yet. I hadn't much cardboard with me so I have only made a pawn, castle, knight and bishop. I painted them black and made little stands for them. I am happy with them but I feel I could do more work with them. I would like to try to give them another dimension by slotting. The knight would be particularly challenging.

Bishop

Queen

Castle

Last week I made some basic models from wire. They are much bigger than my clay pieces. Yesterday I made the final one, the knight.
Last week I also made a pawn from paper straws. I liked how it turned out although it was a bit small. Also I am unsure of how to create each piece distinctively by adding detail. The basic shape is simple enough but I may have to glue pieces on to distinguish them.

Pawn
King
Knight

20/10/11

This week I started working in clay. I made a knight, a pawn and a castle. I made them hollow so I could fire them. I managed to break a piece of each of them but I am still happy with how they turned out. I was told to go back to working with wire, that I should do more with it before moving on.

First weeks

I should have started this before now.
The brief was on movement and motion and I chose to look at chess as a starting point. I like how each piece moves differently. I am also interested in the shape of the pieces and how the could be changed while still being recognisable.
So far I have mostly been looking at the chess board, and how it could be distorted, as well as making models of pieces from wire and tissue.
